The Redemption Project: Responsible Firearm-Law & Safety Education
The Redemption Project by Troy Tactical Defense is a court- and counsel-facing education program for individuals involved in certain first-time firearm possession and carry violations in Detroit and Wayne County. It works like traffic school for firearms: a focused classroom course that teaches Michigan firearm law, safe storage, and the real consequences of firearm incidents, so participants leave informed, compliant, and less likely to reoffend.
Many of these violations are not acts of intent. They happen because a lawful buyer was never properly told what Michigan requires for concealed carry, transport, and storage. The Redemption Project closes that gap.
Program purpose
- Education over incarceration. Give eligible individuals a structured path to understand the law and comply with it going forward.
- Lighter court dockets. Help reduce docket traffic, recidivism, and incarceration tied to uninformed firearm violations.
- Safer communities. Graduates carry accurate knowledge of storage and legal use of force back to their families and neighbors.

- Court clerks and court administrators
- Prosecutors and defense attorneys
- Probation and pretrial services officers
Participation, eligibility, and any effect on a case are determined solely by the court.
General curriculum
- Michigan concealed carry, transport, and possession law, including the firearm laws enacted in February 2024
- What “concealed” means under Michigan law, and when a Concealed Pistol License is required
- Safe firearm storage in the home and vehicle
- The legal use of force and deadly force
- The physical, legal, moral, financial, and mental consequences of firearm incidents
- Staying a lawful owner: how to avoid becoming a “prohibited person”
Format
- Classroom only. A 3 to 4 hour course, held in person in Detroit or online.
- No live fire. No range time or live ammunition, and participants do not bring a firearm.
- Led by a legal professional. Taught by McConnell “Mac” Trapp, J.D., a USCCA-certified instructor and legal consultant.
Completion documentation
Each participant who completes the course receives a signed certificate of completion and a signed acknowledgment of the requirements to continue to lawfully possess a firearm in Michigan. Completion can be confirmed directly to the referring court.
Limitations
- The Redemption Project is an educational program. It is not legal advice, and Troy Tactical Defense does not represent participants.
- Completing the course does not guarantee any particular legal outcome. Case disposition rests entirely with the court.
- This course does not count toward the training required for a Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL).
