Troy Tactical Defense

Troy Tactical Defense is a Michigan-based firearms training company serving new and experienced shooters across the Troy and Metro Detroit area. Troy Tactical Defense is led by McConnell “Mac” Trapp, J.D., a Michigan firearms educator focused on responsible ownership, legal awareness, practical skills, and continuing education.

Our courses are conducted in a friendly, relaxed environment that emphasizes safety and correct technique. Whether you are picking up a handgun for the first time or sharpening skills you have used for years, our training meets you where you are. We have served more than 1,000 students on the range and in the classroom.

Our mission is to provide the general public, with a special emphasis for new handgun and rifle owners, the knowledge requirements of ownership, safe storage, and use of a firearm both as a tool for home defense or for concealed carry. Knowledge is just the beginning. We also prepare students with situational awareness, the psychological and physiological effects the body and mind experience in a life-or-death incident, and the legal obligations of carrying in the State of Michigan.

About The Lead Instructor of Troy Tactical

McConnell “Mac” Trapp, J.D. · Lead Instructor, Troy Tactical Defense

McConnell Trapp is a legal consultant specializing in eDiscovery, Privacy-Protection/Media, and Cyber-Security law, with a passion for the preservation of the 2nd Amendment for American citizens graduating with a Juris Doctorate from the University of Detroit School of Law in 2011. He has also been a concealed pistol carrier since 2008 and is nationally certified with the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) as an instructor in areas from Introduction to the use of Handgun Optics, Children’s Firearms Safety education, to Michigan CPL and the Legal and Lethal Uses of Deadly Force for the State of Michigan. Mr. Trapp is also well-versed in the State’s Legal statutes as to what constitutes Michigan legal carry and presents the material in a manner that attacks the complex areas of the law and firearms and keeps the information in a simple, yet easy-to-understand format for people of all ages, experiences, and backgrounds.

McConnell “Mac” has also been trained and continually trains in the areas of CQB Strategies & Techniques in both rifle and handgun by Chief Petty Officer Matt Johnson of Navy Seal Team Seven as part of the U.S. Special Operations Command Special Mission Unit (SMU), SGT. Dutch Matthews of the United States Marine Corps, Colonel Dritan “Tony” Demiraj of the Albanian Defense Ministry Special Forces, and Carl Hospedales of the British Special Operations of Tactical Law Enforcement in Global Operations (which includes private VIP Close Protection of clients).

“Mac” is one of the few civilians who has reached this level of experience in over 15 years, continues to train at Close Quarters tactical in Clinton Twp, MI under these and several other instructors in an effort to continually hone his craft in the education of firearms and defensive tactics. He also plans to become a certified expert witness for ballistics’ by attending Massad Ayoob’s legal expert training program in 2025.
